Suni Lee Parents:- Suni Lee, an 18-year-old Minnesotan gymnast, won the women’s gymnastics all-around gold medal in Tokyo. Her family, particularly her father, John, helped her get there. Lee, from St. Paul, Minnesota, is the first Hmong-American Olympian. According to Hmong activist Tou Ger Xiong, Suni’s parents, John Lee and Yeev Thoj are Laotian immigrants who escaped the Vietnam War. Suni, for one, takes pleasure in expressing her culture on the global stage: “I want to inspire people,” she told the Star Tribune.
Lee has earned two Olympic medals, one for the team and one for all-around. Lee also qualified for the balance beam final in third,.133 behind the silver medalist. On uneven bars, Lee will go off against reigning World champion Nina Derwael of Belgium. Lee finished.166 behind Derwael in the apparatus final after tying for the day’s best uneven bars score (15.400). Expect gold and silver to be separated by tenths of a point.
In the past, Suni Lee and her father, John, had a unique connection. He also constructed a makeshift balancing beam in the yard for Suni, 7, who loves gymnastics. Suni’s father died two days before the 2019 US National Championships after he fell off a ladder while assisting a neighbor. The fall immobilized him below the chest.
Suni agreed to participate at John’s urging, and she finished second in the all-around and first on uneven bars. That tournament catapulted her into the Tokyo Olympics picture. John is currently in a wheelchair but wants to recover his walking abilities. “I look at Sunisa and think about everything she has gone through to get to where she is,” he told ESPN.
In addition to Lee, both of her parents immigrated to the US from Laos. Sunisa Phabsomphou was born to Yeev. Every great athlete has a team behind them. Suni Lee earned the all-around gymnastics gold medal in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, but who are her family members?
Suni is the first Hmong-American athlete to participate in the Olympics.
In the all-around gymnastics event, the US gymnast won gold with a 57.433, barely ahead of Rebeca Andrade of Brazil.
Suni also won silver in the team final with Simone Biles, Jordan Chiles, and Grace McCallum on Tuesday (July 27th, 2021).
According to an ESPN interview with the family, Yeev started dating John Lee, a newly divorced father of two, when she was 2 years old. Suni considers John her father, even changing her surname to Lee.
