Tripp and Lewinsky met in the Pentagon. As a result of their connection, Lewinsky started telling Tripp about her sexual relationship with the president. Tripp told a conservative book agent, Lucianne Goldberg, who recommended she tape her phone calls with Lewinsky.

But recording someone without their consent is unlawful, and Tripp handed the recordings over to special prosecutor Ken Starr, who was investigating Clinton. In exchange, Tripp was exonerated.

Starr’s probe centered on the recordings.
